Our role in pastoral reorganisation and settling the future of
church buildings closed for regular public worship helps the Church
to adapt local structures and deploy resources and clergy to serve
communities' pastoral and mission needs.
17 church buildings were closed in 2009 and - although we are
not involved procedurally and do not collect statistics - at least
as many new places of worship will have opened during the year.
Some 16,000 churches are in use across the Church of England.
33 schemes were made in 2009 determining the future of closed
church buildings or their sites. 24 provided for alternative uses,
one for return to parish use, two for preservation by the Churches
Conservation Trust, four for demolition and two for the sites of
churches demolished other than under the Pastoral Measure 1983.
Lists (by diocese) of closed church buildings, and their futures
where they have been settled, as at December 2010 are found in
the Resources section on the right hand side column of
this page.
