Our Services

The Church of England Pensions Board provides retirement services for those who have worked for or served the Church

Pensions

The Board administers three main pension schemes.

  • The Church of England Funded Pension Scheme (CEFPS) provides pensions and other benefits for clergy and others in stipendiary ministry, for service from 1 January 1998. Benefits arising from service prior to 1998 are financed by the Church Commissioners.
  • The Church Worker's Pension Fund (CWPF) is a centralised pension scheme for employers connected with the ministry and mission of the Church of England.
  • The Church Administrators Pension Fund (CAPF) provides pensions and other benefits to the staff employed by the National Church Institutions.

Retirement Housing

Around one in four clergy retiring from the stipendiary ministry seeks our assistance in the provision of retirement housing.

The purpose of the retirement housing scheme - the Church Housing Assistance for the Retired Ministry (CHARM) - is to assist those stipendiary clergy who have been unable to make their own provision for somewhere to live in retirement.

CHARM is a discretionary facility and its operation is subsidised partly by the wider Church of England through Vote 5 of the Archbishops' Council's Budget.

Property is available either to rent from the Board, or to purchase in partnership with the Board through a shared ownership scheme.

In total, the Board assists around 3,000 retired clergy households with their housing needs.

Supported Housing

The Board maintains seven Christian retirement communities to house Church pensioners who want to live as independently as possible but with access to support services.  At the centre of each community is the liturgical and spiritual life of the Church of England. As well as a self-contained flat, residents enjoy use of dining facilities, a library, communal grounds and a chapel.
