Rebalancing roles and responsibilities

12/01/2023

Social care has become everybody’s business. Increasing numbers of people are drawing on care and support or caring for a loved one at home.

However, there is no clear agreement or public understanding of who is supposed to do what, no clarity about what should be expected of individuals, families and communities, or what can be expected in return.

The Reimagining Care Commission is proposing a radical shift in how individuals, families, communities and the state relate to one another. We need a new approach based on partnership. We must recognise the obligations we have to one another as human beings, offer more support to unpaid carers, empower communities as places in which people can care for and support one another, alongside a stronger role for the state.

Responsibility for reimagining care and support lies with all of us: individuals, families, communities, and local and national government. We will be outlining a new vision in our upcoming report on 24th January as to how we can balance roles and responsibilities more fairly.

Watch Commission Member Heléna Herklots talk about the need to “base this newly imagined care and support system on a set of clear principles and values which speak to our understanding of the importance of caring for others”. You can watch the video here or by clicking the play button below.
