A biomass boiler warming the heart of an urban community

St Stephen's Bowling (Diocese of Leeds) installed a new, sustainable heating system to ensure that they could remain open to the community, which is in the 2% most deprived parishes nationally.

The previously poor conditions forced parishioners to worship in the presence of patio heaters, with blankets and hot water bottles. Following years of strong community work and a growing congregation, it became clear that a solution would be needed for the broken and insufficient heating system.

Due to the large size of the church building, a large biomass boiler was the best green option. This has resulted in a far more comfortable church congregation. Furthermore, the poor state of the current insulation means that there is scope for making the church more energy efficient, funds permitting.
