Recovering from floods alongside the community

Following severe floods on Boxing Day 2015, St Mary's church in Radcliffe (Diocese of Manchester) needed significant cleaning and restoration. The experience made it clear that investment in flood defence would be a worthwhile endeavour with the ever-increasing threat of river flooding in England. Responding to such a major incident brought much of the community together, with the church initially symbolising the recovery. The rewards of local engagement became clear in 2020 when another flood hit and residents helped to save the church from significant damage by bringing equipment to keep the water out.
