Distinctive deacon

Distinctive deacons are called to a ministry of service, particularly beyond the church. They also have a vital role in proclaiming the Gospel and preaching Christ through word and action.

They often:

  • work with those on the margins
  • build bridges between church and community
  • encourage the Church to respond to need and injustice

In worship, they assist and serve, and they may also preach and proclaim the Gospel. Their primary focus is outward-facing mission.

This role is often collaborative, practical, and rooted in everyday mission.

More information can be found on the Network of Distinctive Deacons website.

Real life stories

Alice

“I was much more drawn to the back row, preferring to hang around the door to chat with those who left super quickly after the service!"

I’m Alice, and I have been ordained as a Deacon since September 2022. Ever since coming to faith as a teenager, I have been involved in church leadership in various ways, particularly in youth ministry.

I currently work for Youthscape, leading our Launchpad programme. Launchpad works with dioceses, clergy, and church leaders to help establish new youth work initiatives across the country. I’m married to Andy, who is ordained as a Priest, and we live in suburban Essex with our two teenage children.

James

“My calling to the diaconate came through others recognising in me something I could not see in myself."

I have lived in Cumbria all my life and am now retired after a career of over forty years at Sellafield. I have been married to Lynn for over 36 years and we have a son, a daughter, and a grandson.
