The Church of England actively seeks to help people from a wide variety of backgrounds and contexts to answer the question, 'Is God calling me to ordained ministry?' This simple guide sets out the main stages for anyone beginning on this lifelong journey.

Talk to a trusted friend or family member and your local church leader about God's calling on your life. Your parish priest or chaplain will be able to put you in touch with your diocese.

You local diocesan vocations adviser will be able to support you as you explore different types of ministry.

If you don’t know which diocese your church is in you can find out on A Church Near You. Your data will also be held the National Church Institutions.

Find inspiration from other people who are on the path to ordination.

Recently ordained deacons and priests from across the Church shared their stories as part of the #NewRev social media campaign.

Discernment and training for ministry

If you are called to ordained ministry you will become part of the Shared Discernment Process in your diocese. Explore further what this means here

If you are recommended for ordination training, you will train on one of three types of pathway through a theological education institution.

Once you have completed your ordination training you will be ready to be ordained deacon. You will then begin your curacy and after a period of usually a year you will be ordained as priest (some clergy decide to become Distinctive Deacons instead).
