The Church Commissioners for England, in partnership with Westminster City Council, has unveiled a brand new public green space in Connaught Village, improving the pedestrian experience at the heart of the historic Hyde Park Estate in London’s West End.
Known as Connaught Village Green, the project – which transforms a patch of land at the centre of Connaught Village – creates a space for residents and visitors alike to meet, rest, and recharge, boosting local businesses.
“Together with our architects DSDHA and a committed group of consultants, we set out to redesign what was once an underutilised section of public realm,” said Charlotte Moss, Head of London at the Church Commissioners for England, speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “The goal has been to make a meaningful contribution to the residents, businesses, and visitors who enjoy all that Connaught Village has to offer.”
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Paul Dimoldenberg, cut the ribbon at the unveiling ceremony on 4 June, with local community groups and the scheme’s architects, DSDHA, in attendance.
Located at the junction between Connaught Street, Kendal Street, and Titchbourne Row, Connaught Village Green introduces new amenities including benches, free drinking water, and additional cycle parking stands. New planters and greenery replace bare paving, softening the landscape, and widened footways improve pedestrian safety.
The unveiling follows six years of extensive consultation with local stakeholders and is the product of close collaboration between the Church Commissioners, Westminster City Council, and contractors WSP and FM Conway.
Well known for its pastel-coloured shopfronts, Connaught Village is the retail and residential heart of the Hyde Park Estate, 90 acres of London’s West End overseen by the Church Commissioners. With a focus on independent luxury and artisanal goods, the Village’s curated selection of boutique retailers and eateries includes La Maritxu, C.Atherley, Dorothy Circus Gallery, Kokoro London and The Atelier.
