Dr Guido de Graaff has been appointed as the new Deputy Theology Adviser to the House of Bishops.

Currently the Director of Studies and Tutor for Christian Doctrine and Ethics at St Augustine’s College of Theology, he will join the Theology Team within the Church of England’s Faith and Public Life department, led by Rev Dr Casey Strine, Secretary for Theology and Theological Adviser to the House of Bishops.

Guido completed his theological studies in the Netherlands before moving to Oxford to pursue a doctorate in Christian Ethics.

In his new role, Guido will work with the whole Theology Team to support the House of Bishops in theological reflection and to provide advice on a range of theological issues. His expertise will aid the team’s open and constructive engagement with church members from across the wide range of theological views in the Church of England.

Bishop Robert Innes, Chair of the Faith And Order Commission (FAOC), said: “I am delighted that we are in a position to make this appointment which further strengthens the national church’s theological capacity. I and colleagues on the Faith and Order Commission look forward very much to working with Guido in his new role.”

The Rev Dr Richard Sudworth, Director of Faith and Public Life, said: “I’m delighted that Guido is joining the team supporting the important work of theologically resourcing the Church. I know from his time at St Augustine’s College of Theology that Guido will bring astute theological rigour to the task and a love for the whole Church.”

Dr Guido de Graaff said: “Having worked in theological education for some years, I consider it a privilege to be able to continue serving the Church in this new role. I very much look forward to joining the Theology Team and the Faith and Public Life department more widely.”

Dr de Graaff was appointed following an open advertisement of the post and a rigorous selection process. He is expected to take up the post in June.
