Amazon Rainforest Fires

23/08/2019

Responding to the fires in the Amazon rainforest, the Church of England's lead bishop for Environmental Affairs, the Bishop of Salisbury, Nick Holtam, said:

"There is a climate emergency which does not know international boundaries. The Amazon is a global resource as well as a national one.

"In the last 36 hours, I have been asked to sign a variety of climate-related petitions and letters. People are concerned. So our politicians should be talking about it and finding ways to act collectively.

"The economy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the environment.

"At the moment, there are so many initiatives to plant trees to help carbon capture. It is appalling to see such large areas of rainforest burn.

"They destroy more than the trees. They destroy hope."
