Church of England’s former Chief Legal Advisor receives CBE and Church Commissioners’ Chief Executive receives OBE in New Year Honours List

Two senior officials with the Church of England have received honours in the New Year Honours List. The Church of England’s former Chief Legal Adviser, Stephen Slack, has been awarded a CBE and the Church Commissioner’s Chief Executive Andrew Brown has been awarded an OBE.

William Nye, Secretary General to the Archbishops’ Council, said: “This award to Stephen Slack recognises a career of considerable achievement, not least in service to the wider Church of England through its National Institutions, and I am sure members of General Synod and Stephen’s former colleagues will be delighted to see him recognised in this way.”

Stephen retired at Easter 2019 following 18 years of service to the Church of England including as Head of the Church of England Legal Office and Chief Legal Adviser to the Archbishops' Council and the General Synod as well as Official Solicitor to the Church Commissioners.

Andrew Brown is due to retire as Chief Executive of the Church Commissioners at the end of January 2020. Commenting on his award Loretta Minghella, First Church Estates Commissioner, said ‘Andrew has given a remarkable 25 years of dedicated, generous, and unstinting service to the Church of England. It is wonderful to see him receive this wider recognition he so rightly deserves'.

Andrew took up his current post in 2003 having spent the previous eight and a half years as the Commissioners’ first Chief Surveyor. Prior to joining the Commissioners, he was a partner in a private practice firm of chartered surveyors based in Central London.
