Preaching about generosity is something that should come from the heart.  However sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. These resources offer different contexts from which to consider giving and generosity. They can help develop an authentic and powerful message, particularly for those who have less experience at speaking on this subject.

Preaching Generosity is a new, weekly, bite-sized preaching resource, produced by the Diocese of Rochester in partnership with St Augustine’s College of Theology and the National Giving Team of the Church of England. Each week, a short sermon idea, drawn from one of that week’s Common Worship lectionary readings, will be made available to give preachers the tools to become comfortable and confident in preaching about generosity.

Stewardship For Sundays: Stewardship ideas for sermons and the offertory based on the Common Worship lectionary, contributed by Brian Morris, to whom we offer grateful thanks. 

Stewardship for Harvest from the Diocese of Winchester.  It forms a five sermon series on Luke chapters 14 to 17; including “The Cost of being a Disciple”, “The Lost Sheep & The Lost Coin” and “The Rich Man and Lazarus”. 

Giving in Grace from the Diocese of Liverpool includes extensive sermon resources with five different sermon tracks exploring: 5 passages from Matthew, 4 passages each from Mark and Luke, plus the Exodus narrative and Paul’s detailed teaching on giving in 2 Corinthians. The Exodus and Luke resources also include all age worship materials.

Individual study resources

Individual study resources enable people to go at their own pace, and in private. They explore generosity in many different ways, and vary in length.

Group study resources

People are hugely influenced by what others do, and so group study resources can be really helpful in developing a shared generous culture. 

Retreats

Sometimes you may want to take a more focussed approach to giving and generosity within you church context. A retreat is a great way of doing this with a small group or leadership team and can be done in a wide variety of settings. 

Encouraging generosity

We need to cultivate a generous culture, where we grow in an understanding of God’s generosity towards us and share that generosity through our ministry and mission.
