As a building with a high heat capacity, St Marys Ellenbrook (Diocese of Manchester) remains relatively cool inside during periods of hot weather. This meant that during the heatwave of July 2022, it was uniquely placed within the local area to provide a space for people to escape the high temperatures. For the three days of intense heat, the church offered the chance for people in the community to work, chat and pray. A team of volunteers helped to set up this operation at short notice, even managing to source cold drinks and ice cream, ensuring that vulnerable groups could remain safe.
