Response to 'Support for All'
In April 2010 the Mission and Public Affairs Council of the Church of England issued a response to the Labour Government's consultation on family policy Support for All: the Families and Relationships Green Paper
While the Council noted that the Labour Government expressed an ambivalent attitude towards marriage in the Green Paper, it welcomed the Government's commitment to families and the funding and strategic work it had undertaken since the publication of its first Green Paper in 1997.
The Council's response drew attention to the problems that still face families such as
- an increase in self-harming and eating disorders
- high-profile cases of family neglect and abuse of children
- increased inequalities between families.
The paper states that in order to make asking for help acceptable, it is vitally important that all parts of civil society are involved and that voluntary organisational activity cannot replace valuable therapeutic services.
