So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3.1-3
Reflection
A few years ago, when social media first became a thing, I remember talking to a friend about why I post online. I wanted to share what it means to be a Christian, the highs, lows and real life with Christ. My friend explained he’d made the decision to delete his accounts. He was constantly seeking others’ approval, checking how many likes he’d had or what others had commented. Online spaces can tempt us to build our identity around being ‘seen’. We can feel pressure to present a perfect image or secure affirmation through likes or comments. This pressure can shape our behaviour and mood. It can pull hearts toward comparison or a desire to impress.
When Paul writes to the church in Colossae, he offers a grounding truth. Our life is hidden with Christ in God. When we feel the pressure to perform online, what does this mean? Our identity rests in Christ rather than in the approval of others. This gives freedom from the need to perform, to defend, or to seek approval.
When identity is anchored in Christ, we move through digital spaces with steadier hearts. We speak with kindness. We interact with honesty. We remember we are known and loved by God long before anyone notices us online.
Response
Take a moment to remember that your life is hidden with Christ. How might this truth free you from the pressure to be seen in a certain way?
Lord Jesus, steady my heart in your truth.
Shape my identity in you alone.
Guide my responses online so they reflect your love and peace today.
Amen.
