Events are taking place to mark a quarter of a century of women’s ordination to the priesthood in the Church of England. The first group of women were ordained priests on Saturday 12 March 1994, in Bristol Cathedral.

NEWS / The Church of England's dioceses* have now all voted in favour of the current draft legislation to enable women to be bishops. Manchester was the last diocese to vote and they approved the motion at a meeting of their Synod yesterday.  In 2011 both London and Chichester diocesan synods voted against the legislation.

In May 2014, the House of Bishops made its Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests (GS Misc 1076) in the context of impending legislation enabling the consecration of women as bishops.

NEWS / The Church of England is on course to ordain around 950 men and women this year to minister in churches across the country.

The General Synod has reaffirmed its commitment to women bishops and called, less than a year after the previous proposals were rejected, for new draft legislation to be introduced.
