The Archbishop of Canterbury has paid tribute to the Archbishop of York in General Synod earlier today at what would have been his final Synod.

Bishop Stephen Geoffrey Cottrell will be confirmed as the 98th Archbishop of York at 11am on Thursday 9 July 2020, in an online service.

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, has called the Church of England to “learn afresh how to share the gospel in the world” as church and society face “turbulent times” in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of the Church of England's General Synod are to meet remotely for the first time, in response to the restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a recent meeting with survivors of the abuse carried out by John Smyth QC, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has made the following the statement today:
