This page lists a range of resources which have been developed for dioceses, cathedrals and other Church Bodies to support the implementation of the "Responding Well to Victims and Survivors of Abuse" House of Bishops' Guidance. They do not form part of the Guidance and are optional to use.

Easy-read summary

The "Responding Well to Victims and Survivors of Abuse" Implementation Group brings together a number of survivors and safeguarding professionals and volunteers from dioceses, cathedrals, parishes and the National Safeguarding Team, to work on initiatives that support the implementation of the Guidance. One of these initiatives was the production of an easy-read summary for victims and survivors, so that the content of the Guidance becomes more accessible and victims and survivors have a clear and succinct overview of the range of support options available in the Church.

The easy-read summary can be found here. An editable version of the summary can be accessed here. Dioceses can download this version and tailor it to their local circumstances (e.g. by adding local contact details for Safeguarding Advisors). By downloading this content, dioceses and any other users are agreeing to comply with our terms and conditions, which state the parameters of our acceptable use policy.

Help guide: Therapeutic support - Provider registration

The Implementation Group has also developed a help guide that explains the difference between registered and accredited therapy providers, as well as the difference between regulated and non-regulated professions linked to the provision of therapy, counselling and other psychology services. This is in response to concerns that unregistered providers are used in certain areas when arranging therapeutic support for victims and survivors of abuse, which goes against the Guidance.

The help guide is not part of the Guidance and is provided as supplementary information only. A decision-making flowchart accompanies the help guide and may provide an additional helpful tool for Church Bodies in implementing the Guidance.

Overview of implementation

The National Safeguarding Team and the Implementation Group continue to monitor the effectiveness of the "Responding Well to Victims and Survivors of Abuse" Guidance and how it is being implemented. In October-December 2022, 6 months after the Guidance came into effect, a baseline survey was circulated to dioceses to understand their position with regard to implementation. This was an internal exercise, but a summary of the findings of that survey is available here. A follow-up survey will be conducted in 2024 to enable comparison and an assessment of progress.
