Comment from Bishop of Rochester Jonathan Gibbs, the Church of England’s lead bishop for safeguarding.

The accounts of abuse shared at IICSA’s Child Migration hearing were harrowing and we commend the bravery of those former child migrants who came forward to share their experiences at the Inquiry.

Two new members with professional safeguarding expertise have been appointed to the Church’s National Safeguarding Panel (NSP), chaired by Meg Munn.

Following the recommendations made in IICSA’s investigation report into child migration programmes, published in March 2018, the National Safeguarding Team is now in dialogue with, on behalf of the Church of England, the Child Migrants Trust, an independent charity which supports child migrants and their families nationally and internationally. We await the UK government’s response to the IICSA’s recommendations.
