St George's Wash Common (Diocese of Oxford) completed a large-scale project to improve their heating system in an environmentally friendly way. With the intention of creating a welcoming and accessible building, and reducing dependence on financially costly energy use, they have adopted a combination of technologies. Despite taking over a decade from inception to completion and requiring significant funding, the project has transformed the building for the future, enhancing a valuable space for the congregation and wider community.
While solar panels and a heat pump have been utilised to sustainably heat the church, massively reducing heat loss was a really important starting point. This case study outlines the approach that was taken in converting to low-carbon heating, and how the system was made more efficient.
