Creating a warm refuge for the community

Lobley Hill All Saints, also known as Hillside Church (Diocese of Durham) have been using their pre-existing Joshua Tree cafe, in the church hall, to host a 'warm space' for locals in need to gather. The high energy costs during the cold winter of 2022-23 meant that people all across the country struggled to keep warm and comfortable. By offering up this space, run by volunteers and featuring activities, food and a warm space to just be, the church has made a big difference in the community. Whilst the building is heated by a gas boiler, efficiency measures have been enacted, including the use of smart controls, and carbon emissions are saved by attendees whose own homes aren't heated during these hours.
